Solid Wood Paneling has been Used for Centuries
Solid wood paneling has been used for centuries in elegant and rustic settings; it has withstood the test of time. The beauty never fades from the beginning of installation to fifty years of being in a home.
Solid wood paneling is a natural material that responds naturally to climatic changes. When solid wood paneling is preconditioned, it allows the wood to adjust to on-site atmospheric conditions.
What Condition are your Hardwood Plank Paneling Walls in?
Follow these steps to evaluate the condition of your solid hardwood plank paneling walls and their finish.
Finish Condition: Has the finish been worn off or is it just dirty? See if the finish is dull, chipped, or scraped. To test if the finish has worn off, find a convenient spot and pour one to two tablespoons of water onto the wall. If the water soaks in immediately and leaves a darkened spot, the finish is worn and water can damage the wood. If the water soaks in after a few minutes and darkens the wood only slightly, the finish is partially worn. If the water beads on top, the surface is properly sealed.
Wood Condition: If the finish is worn, the wood may have been damaged. Are there stains, burns, cuts, gouges, holes, cracks or warped boards? If the hardwood is damaged, repair or replacement may be required before you deep clean your solid wood plank paneling walls or apply a maintenance coat.

Hanging Pictures on Hardwood without the Damage
If you want to hang a picture but don’t want to damage the wall’s wood paneling, use adhesive hangers. 3M Command Picture Hangers are probably your best bet. These allow you to hang your picture but also to remove it without damaging your solid wood plank paneling walls.
The adhesive releases when you pull the tab; so the plank paneling should be unscathed. Command Picture Hangers come in three different types: Picture Hanging Strips, Sawtooth Picture Hangers and Wireback Picture Hangers. Whenever you decide to move out, or to redecorate, pull the tabs and there will be no trace of the picture.
American Hardwood
Hardwoods are deciduous trees that have broad leaves, produce a fruit or nut and generally go dormant in the winter. America’s forests grow hundreds of varieties of hardwood trees that thrive in this country’s temperate climates. These varieties, or species, include oak, ash, cherry, maple and poplar.
All the commercially available U.S. hardwoods are crafted into furniture, cabinetry, woodwork and built-ins. It’s simply a matter of taste, preference and availability.
Certain hardwood species aren’t recommended for flooring because they’re not hard enough to withstand heavy wear and tear. However, most hardwoods would be recommended for walls and ceilings.
